You could be the most intelligent man over the earth, and worth nothing. Because when living in a community, you should be able to communicate with others sharing that knowledge. And let me explain because this goes on as there are way too many roads to follow (and please, just keep reading, you'll get everything sorted after this firsts paragraphs)
You could be the really professional guy who tells everything you know about something, and that could be a lot, but you just spray it out loud. I'm pretty sure that you have attended some classes or events with someone who knows A LOT. But, you end up not paying attention and just falling asleep because that person doesn't seem passionate about it and doesn't know how to tell the story. Even worse, there are some people who know nothing and they do their things as if they weren't alive, like robots. Is that what you dream of as a life model? I bet it's not.
Or, you could know a lot (or less than the previous example), but being ABSOLUTELY IN LOVE with what you do, not just speaking “another day”, thinking about doing the same thing all over again. And I'll talk about an example in just one minute.
Safari guides, I work with quite a lot of them as part of GoThombi, and I'd interviewed even more. And that makes a HUGE difference when going out on the bush. Can you imagine being on your first safari in Africa with a guide, stopping close to a herd of elephants, and getting a printed fact-sheet? That would look weird, isn't it? But we are accustomed to getting those fact-sheets verbally with people telling all the details about something like a robot. That's not for me.
Whatever you do, do it with all your heart. It is a famous quote, but I can't stress it enough. Guides that stops by a group of impalas, and start with “Check this out! IMPALAS! wooow, I love these animals, do you know why are those one of my favorites ones? They live in groups, and always take care one of each other…”. Just read the sentence again, imagine yourself in a safari car, and feel the vibes. We are talking about impalas! There are thousands of them, we are not talking about leopards, you are going to see a lot of impalas when going on safari in South Africa. But even talking about a pretty common animal, that guy makes you feel like you are seeing a once in a lifetime sight.
What's the point of spending most of your life doing something without passion? I get it, we all have hard times, days that don't feel like moving on… or jobs that might not be the best, but come on, even those jobs, need people passionate. And in tourism, I feel that this is a must, we have to make those trips amazing for our guests. IMPALAS! I love them now because of a guide that I had that started that way when we saw a group (true story).
Being passionate isn't just about storytelling, don't get me wrong, isn't about giving a nice act about something. Being passionate is something deep that flows when you really love what you do, and the excitement about that is huuuge. Because you can be a great storyteller, but not having the passion will make that if something goes wrong, or the way you haven't expected, the reactions you show will expose the real you.
Go wild, be passionate, communicate with that inner child that is excited about what is doing, and enjoy every single moment… we need more people like that. We only live once, enjoy it.
